Key catches, benchmark starts, and a strong afternoon in the trenches highlight the NFL’s former Tennessee Volunteer’s Week 12 play.
The NFL has had plenty of action for the former Vols this week, but none have performed as well as San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings. He was the only one in a defensive game between the 9ers and the New Orleans Saints at Levi’s Stadium where either team found the end zone. Enter Jennings. With times closing in the first half and the home team threatening his line for five yards, Jennings rushed into the left-back corner of the end zone. After quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s pass was turned over by Saints cornerback just in front of his face, Jennings adjusted mid-air to snare the ball on an end-overend and score for a touchdown with just 13 seconds remaining. San Francisco won 13-0 and currently tops the NFC West standings with a 7-4 record.

On the other side of the country, rookie Cade Mays scored his first NFL start of his career and hit the field for the Carolina Panthers in various ways. His VFL in the Knoxville area saw several roles for Carolina, including lining up in the backfield in the fullback role. The Panthers defeated the Denver Broncos 23-10 inside Bank of America Stadium. With the win, the Panthers now sit just 1.5 minutes behind Tampa Bay in first place in the NFC South.

Another strong day came in the form of Jacob Johnson of the Las Vegas Raiders. Although he doesn’t usually appear in his score in the box as a full-back, his influence was crucial in the Raiders’ overtime victory over Seattle. He provided a pair of blocks that resulted in Josh Jacobs’ rushing score, including a lead block in the game for 86 yards that earned him a rush in overtime, helping Vegas pick up 283 yards to the ground in the game. .
