University of Virginia Cancels Final Home Football Game After Shooting

Mr. Jones was in court on Wednesday. He said he was seeking his own counsel, and would be represented by a public defender in the interim.

He was held without bond; a court date has been set for December 8.

A prosecutor read a police account of the shooting, in which a witness said Mr. Jones was “aiming at certain people and was not randomly shooting.”

The team’s coach, Tony Elliott, said during a news conference on Tuesday that his priority was spending time with his players as they mourn. “I’m just trying to figure out, step by step, how to be strong for these young men,” he said, adding that they would decide together when they would return to the field.

Campbell Robertson contributed reporting.
